If Remarque had written remafque book, so that the two different worlds, the one with Ravic as a surgeon and the one with Ravic as a lover, had been spread out evenly across the story, it would have been a better book.

Ravic had the impression she did not see him at all. She walked quickly, but with a peculiar stagger. His surgical skills are excellent; he has to make a living so he performs surgeries for “acclaimed” French doctors who are inept.
